Firestone Grand Touring World Championship

Post by Dominic Mako on Thu Jun 06, 2013 6:31 pm

Firestone Grand Touring World Championship

It's June 1993 and IMSA has formed a partnership with Firestone to start a new 7 race series taking place across the globe, showcasing the best North America, Europe, and Asia have to offer.  Participating manufacturers Ford, GM, Mazda, Toyota, Nissan, and BMW have agreed to take part, and will be watching very closely to see how their funding will be utilized.

The series will be run in two classes.  The "GT Lights" series will be a support race, with a lower budget involved and shorter races on smaller tracks.  The Grand Touring World Championship (GTWC) series will involve much more money and faster cars, with longer races on bigger tracks.  Participants will be using the same model for each class.

Additionally, like a real race series, there could be external influences that impact the raceday events.  This will come in the form of random events as well as a sort of "rubber banding" that would hopefully keep competition a little tighter.  There will be an update in this thread at least 24 hours in advance (or more) about these events, and each will be listed in the Race Events section below the track name.

There is important information in this post within the spoilers below.  The following spoiler contains the basic race regulations and some helpful details for new drivers.  As always, failure to comply with regulations below may result in disqualification.  Also be sure to review the MSM Rules of the Road and Race Regulations:

Car List

Spoiler:

Each factory team will respond in different ways to the success or failure of their cars.  The teams will put MORE money into their programs if they are unable to see the results they expect.  This response will come in varying degrees, as listed below:

1990 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z
* General Motors is bringing the oldest car to the grid, but recent sales success means they potentially have the most money to pour into racing.  If they don't see sustained success, the cash could come rolling in.
- Fail to finish in two consecutive podiums in class: +15 PI points
- Fail to beat the 1993 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R in class: +5 PI points

1990 Mazda Savanna RX-7
* Mazda is fresh off their win at Le Mans, becoming the first in Japan, and seem to be riding a wave of success.  Have they accomplished all they set out to do in motorsports?  The money may not be there at the start, and they could easily lose focus down the line.
- Fail to finish top two in class: +5 PI
- Fail to beat Toyota OR Nissan in class: +10 PI points

1991 BMW M3 E30
* BMW knows motorsports, and has found immense success with this car in Europe.  Now they're poised to take on the world, but will the high expectations give them the patience to see this effort through?
- Fail to finish in two consecutive podiums in class: +10 PI points
- Fail to finish in top two in class: +5 PI points

1992 Nissan Silvia CLUB Ks
* Nissan are no neophytes to racing, but they've yet to truly find sustained success.  They'll do anything to find that taste of gold, but being the little brother in Japan limits their options.
- Fail to podium in class: +5 PI points
- Fail to beat Toyota OR Mazda in class: +5 PI points

1992 Toyota Supra 2.0 GT Twin Turbo
* Toyota is the sleeping giant, capable of shoveling in huge amounts of cash at any given moment, but lack the motivation to turn any racing success into sales.  Can you prove them wrong?
- Fail to win in class: +10 PI
- Fail to beat Nissan AND Mazda in class: +5 PI points

1993 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R
* Ford has brought the newest machinery to this fight, with a laser focus on proving themselves against General Motors first and foremost.  Will they become obsessed with one target and forget the others?
- Fail to win in class: +5 PI
- Fail to beat the 1990 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z in class: +15 PI points

These bonuses are carried over week to week.  They can be stacked, so you may get more than one bonus for the same week.

Please indicate your car selection in this thread.  Note that some bonuses involve beating a rival.  It's entirely possible nobody will select a rival car.  When a manufacturer doesn't have a rival, they simple don't try as hard, and so you will miss those bonus opportunities.

Upgrade and Car Restrictions:

Spoiler:

The GT Lights will be upgraded to the top of C class (plus bonuses).  There will be no engine swaps, drivetrain swaps, or front and rear aero used.

The GTWC cars will be upgraded to the top of B class (plus bonuses).  There will be no engine swaps or drivetrain swaps.  Front and rear aero and roll cages are required.

Livery Requirements

Spoiler:

On the GT Light series cars, please have the Firestone logo and IMSA logo behind the front wheel well.  The number board will be sent to all participants, which should be placed behind the Firestone and IMSA logo.  Drivers in these cars will have their number, the Firestone sponsor logo, and only one other company sponsor on their car.

On the GTWC series cars, please have the Firestone logo, IMSA, and number board placed in the spots mentioned.  Drivers in these cars will have their number, the Firestone sponsor logo, IMSA logo, and the primary logo from the  GT Light series cars, plus any other minor sponsorship logos you wish to use.

Events:

Spoiler:

We'll be running two races per weekend, using the following circuits and dates.  The first race will be the GT Lights followed by the GTWC.

There will still be a three lap qualifier at the first track before each race begins.  The GT Lights series will be a timed 20 minute event.  The GTWC races will be a timed 60 minute event

Week #1
Barcelona, Montserrat, Spain
GT Lights - Camino Viejo Short Reverse
GTWC - Camino Viejo Full Reverse
Sun June 23- 08:30 PM GMT (9:30 PM UK / 4:30 PM US EST)
* Race Event - Hot Hot Hot!

(Your crew chief warns you that the hot weather has had an impact on the engine's ability to pull in cool air.  Being at altitude as well doesn't help, because the air isn't as dense.  Despite their best efforts, you should expect power to be down by about 5% in both the GT Light and GTWC races this weekend.)

Week #2
Barcelona, Montserrat, Spain
GT Lights - Iberian International Circuit Short Reverse
GTWC - Iberian International Circuit Full Reverse
Sun June 30 - 08:30 PM GMT (9:30 PM UK / 4:30 PM US EST)
* Race Event - It doesn't always stay on the plain.

(Your crew chief has warned the dampness and lack of rubbering-in will cause the GT Lights race to have a 10% grip handicap, which will rubber-in a bit by the second race to give the WGTC cars a 5% grip handicap.  Due to the protests, some of the track staff will have a late arrival.  The qualification for the GT Lights race will be suspended.  Lobby setting will have a random grid for the race and there will be no restart in the event of a collision.  Normal qualification and restarts will resume for the GTWC race.)

Week #3
Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
GT Lights - Nurburgring Short Circuit
GTWC - Nurburgring Grand Prix Circuit
Sun July 7 - 08:30 PM GMT (9:30 PM UK / 4:30 PM US EST)
* Race Event - In Germany, everyone wants a fast car.

Week #4
Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg, Germany
GT Lights - Hockenheim Ring National Circuit
GTWC - Hockenheim Ring Grand Prix
Sun July 14 - 08:30 PM GMT (9:30 PM UK / 4:30 PM US EST)
* Race Event - If at first you don't succeed...

Week #5
Motegi, Haga District, Japan
GT Lights - Twin Ring Motegi East
GTWC - Twin Ring Motegi East
Sun July 21 - 08:30 PM GMT (9:30 PM UK / 4:30 PM US EST)
* Race Event - It's everyone's fault.

Both the GT Lights and WGTC races will take place on the shorter Twin Ring Motegi East.  There is pride in Japan as they rally around the victims.  All Japanese manufacturers get +5PI.

Week #6
Shimotsuma, Ibaraki, Japan
GT Lights - Tsukuba Short
GTWC - Tsukuba Full
Sun August 3 - 08:30 PM GMT (9:30 PM UK / 4:30 PM US EST)
* Race Event - Rising sun or hidden sun?

FAQ

Spoiler:

Q. How do I total the number of bonus PI points I get?
A. After each race I will post the bonus PI points each driver gets for that week per class.  You may have a different total for GT Light vs. your GTWC car.  You may have multiple bonuses for that week, but you will not be able to carry over these points into the following week.

Q. Can I get two bonuses in the same week?
A. Yes.  For example, if you're in the Mustang, and your opponent in the Camaro finishes ahead of you, you will get both " Fail to win in class: +5 PI" and " Fail to beat the 1990 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z in class: +15 PI points" for a whopping +20 PI bonus in the next event!

Q. Do I have to use the same car in GT Light and GTWC?
A. Yes.  You will obviously have a different build, since the GT Light doesn't allow for aero, but the car will be the same.

Q. Why the "OR" vs. "AND" for some cars?
A. For example, the Nissan could beat the Toyota, but lose to the Mazda, and still get the PI bonus.  This is because it's " Fail to beat Toyota OR Mazda in class: +5 PI points"  If the Toyota beats the Nissan and loses to the Mazda, there is no bonus.  This is because " Fail to beat Nissan AND Mazda in class: +5 PI points."

Q. What should the decals and number board look like?
A. The number board itself will be a 50 x 50 white square.  You may outline that square if you wish, and it can be high or low in this area.  In front of this will be the red Firestone logo, which will be 30 x 30 in size.  The IMSA logo will appear directly below that.  These items are placed behind the front wheel.

I have updated the FAQ with an image of the livery requirement. Please remember your GT Light car will have only your one main sponsor, plus these logos. Your GTWC car will have these logo, plus any additional sponsors you wish to add. The cars do not need to have identical paint jobs. Personally, I plan to have my GT Light car look much simpler compared to the GTWC car.

My choices are the same as Snip, either Nissan or Toyota. But seeing as he named them 1st, I'll take the one he doesn't use.

just to clarify we have to use our primary designated sponsor for the car livery. for the lites that will be the ONLY sponsor we can use on the car, for the GTWC we use our main plus any other minor sponsor we choose?

I think I misunderstood the post when I 1st read it. Anyway, I'll take the Toyota.

So to be clear about this..''Fail to win in class''...does this mean for every race I don't win, I add 10 PI for the next weeks race ?

I believe it resets for each race if i recall, so the most you could have for any 1 race in each class would be 15+ PI in the Toyota.

Ok, I was thinking that it might accumulate as the series progressed. So for example in the GTWC, because you won the first few races you would still be at B500, while everyone else was around A540.

Snip has that correct. You may note some bonuses aren't applied until two races are completed, such as "Fail to finish in two consecutive podiums in class: +10 PI points"

Also, the Toyota has the option to do the Turbo to N/A swap, and I'm perfectly fine with that.
