VM SpecRacing Series 7 - MSM Repsol

VM SpecRacing Series 7 - MSM Repsol Banner

Clark GriswoId, SKISMO, and Dominic Mako will represent Maverick Speed Motorsports in Virtual Motorsports' first Forza 5 spec series - SpecRacing Series 7.  We will run under the team name of MSM Repsol, using the 2000 FORD SVT COBRA R with a C Class build.  This thread will contain information about our tuning, lap times, and race results as the season proceeds.

First order of business, please remember to post or update your current post on the VM website with the following sign-up:

http://www.virtual-motorsports.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=364&t=5339

Gamertag: Dominic Mako
Car number: 08
If you represent a Car Club or Team, please state it: Maverick Speed Motorsports
Are you competing in: EU/US? - US
Status: Privateer / Team - Team
Name of Privateer / Team Entry: MSM Repsol
Have you read the Series Rules and the Virtual Motorsports Racing Standards: No... I mean YES!
Have you sent a friend request: Yes.
How you like to be considered: Room Host / Backup Host / Neither  - Neither

Next, the team livery must be the same/similar for all three members.  Given the difficulty of sharing paint jobs, it's easier for me to just add your number to the current one I have painted and then "share" it so you can just grab it by the creator.  You will not be able to modify the livery or save it yourself.  I think this is easier than trying to duplicate it yourself.  I'll send you a message on XBL once that's done.

Spoiler:
That's all for now.  We'll have more posts and comments here as the series trundles along.  Thanks and good luck!

I've run about 12 laps on Road Atlanta (two 6 lap sessions), which is the first race on March 13. I went with full downforce on the front and rear, and my best lap was almost exactly 1:35 flat. I feel like with some cleaning up of mistakes here and there, I could get down to 1:34.5.

The stock tires in the build will probably take longer to heat up than race tires, so if you guys have ideas about how to tune so they heat up more quickly, that could be beneficial. If it takes 4 laps to get them heated, and we have a mandatory pit stop, that's 8 of 25 laps where the tires are not optimal. If a change in PSI or toe/camber gets them up to temp one lap sooner, that could be two extra laps where we will run faster times. I believe mine are at 29 cold right now. If I get a chance I'll take a look at my telemetry and let you know what I see.

Regarding the tune, I noticed a post by Zermatt on VM, which confirms some things that I've heard going around lately. First, the tire pressure does need to be lower, as I suspected. Also, Sykosis told me that he was talking to Hawk and he recommended some extreme camber settings. Anyway, I've got it posted below in the spoiler, which I hope to test out again soon:

I ran some laps with the posted tune, and made a few minor adjustments that seemed to help out a bit.
rear tire 27.5
front toe 0.4
rear toe -0.2
ride height dropped all the way front and rear
full downforce (did not seem to change top speed too much, and made the car grip like hell)

I am not an avid tuner.  I do believe the alignment and tire pressures may need to be tweaked.  I do feel confident, however, in the ride height and downforce.  let me know what you guys think

I have honestly been trying to share the paint scheme, but everytime I try to add the right side I get an error "pleaes try again later."  I've had it for days now.  I'll let you know if I get it fixed, but it seems impossible at the moment.

Nevermind, I deleted the file and resaved and it's fixed now.  So, here's how this works.  I have each side of the car saved as a separate vinyl, instead of one complete design.  Just search for Dominic Mako as the creator in new vinyl groups and you'll see them all there.  You can "follow" me as a designer so you don't have to type in my name to pull up every single one of then.  After you have it applied to your car and saved, you'll then search for the VM number board and VM URL.  Apply their number board to the car, add your number, and you're in like Flint.  Let me know if you have trouble lining it up and getting the vinyls.

I ran two stints of 6 laps tonight and my best was 1:34.765 clean, which seems to be 3rd in our little team here. I think I'll hit 1:34.5 during the actual race, but I don't expect to surpass that.

Awesome paint Dom! Thanks for sharing!

Ran laps last night, running mid 34's with a low of 34.1, but still not breaking into 33's.

With a 15 minute quali session, we should be able to put down a solid lobby showing.

Did you guys find anything on tire temps?  I changed the negative camber all the way down to -4.2F and -4.0R and all of a sudden ran a 134.1 then a 133.935.  Mybe a fluke but the car feels pretty solid.  it was 5 and 6 laps in running tires at 28.0F & 27.5R.  also put toe to 0.0 & 0.0

VM SpecRacing Series 7 - MSM Repsol Empty Re: VM SpecRacing Series 7 - MSM Repsol

Post by Dominic Mako Fri Mar 14, 2014 5:25 am

So, here's what happened in the first event at Road Atlanta. Prior to the race I finally managed to hit the 1:34.497, which is almost exactly what I predicted on Monday. Qualifying setup was an absolute mess, as we had trouble getting two guys into one of the lobbies, and then the lobby got stalled because they started qualifying on their own, so everything got pushed back by about an hour.

Clark, Skismo, and I all managed to get into lobby 1, with me only making it by .03. We were 6th, 7th, and 8th respectively (of nine drivers in this lobby). The launch at the start was screwed up because the lobby host only announced the race start two seconds in advance, so half the field was kinda flat-footed. We got through without a crash though, and I essentially spent the next 25 laps looking at Skismo's tail lights from about 200 feet away.

As the saying goes though "In order to finish first, first you have to finish." A few other drivers ended up making critical mistakes that wrecked their cars, like, big time. This moved all three of us up one spot as the laps ticked down, and we kept our cars both clean and on the pavement. If there's one thing to be said for MSM drivers, it's that we know how to go flat out for 45 minutes with other people on the track. A 3, 4, 5 finish was way better than I expected, and I think Clark and Skismo acquitted the team well. I'll try to get some pics posted soon.

I ran 5 laps using the same tune from Rd ATL at Sebring and pulled 2:26 flat. I'm not sure about the aero, but I think knocking it down could help that time.

US Lobby 1.

Semi-Pro Tip: Damage makes your pit stop longer.

I must of had some damage (had t be minimal as the stang was driving fine) from chasing Flight around the forst 10 laps. TG Virality went into the pits 2 cars after me ( No damage ) and then proceeded to pass right by. Thats a Forza first for me. Now if we could have split times back......

Great race last night, the 3rd to 5th battle was a lot of fun and close.

So, in the losers lobby, I started 4th because my qually time was that bad. At the start the guy in front of me got caught flatfooted again and I actually tapped him as I was trying to get around. I was in third for a while until the leader lost traction and spun on his own. I was stuck behind the new leader for a few laps and realized I was losing about a second a lap behind her, so I pitted early.

Then I started hammering out consistent laps in the high 2:25 range, and hit 2:25.5 a few times, but there was a blue car that just hung on my tail the entire time. With about 4 laps to go the leader finally pitted and I was in front, but I made a small mistake at turn one and got passed. Then on the next laps I got my outside wheels caught on the curbing and nearly lost the car. I got it back under control, but at that point I lost too much space and finished about 300 ft behind the leader to finish second.
