Poster development

Post by Othelion on Tue Jan 31, 2012 3:25 pm

---Changed the topic title as this turned out in the place to discuss the posters more than the tunes---

I have a few rides ready to go to test drivers. The Renault 5 is a tune from in december that did a bunch of top 100's back then, but with a few small refinements. I'm sure the fast drivers in MSM can get very good times from it. I painted it myself, but it can use a more eye catching paint job.

The Vauxhall Insignia was inspired by Ducky's paint, which I really liked a lot that it made me try tuning the car. I'm still not 100% happy with the result, but it can be a competitive lobby car. To get the tune better I would need some feedback.

I'll use this opportunity to try out a poster design as well Smile

Looking nice - could you send me the source files for these?

I'd like to have a play around with them and see if I can get something a little different to the purple - im not too fond of that really.

I tried other color combinations too. Darker purples and red to match the team colors, but I didn't like the results:

Another one I tried, I did like, but it has no resemblance to the club colors at all.

The red/purple ones were mostly to show that that didn't work at all Smile I like the blue and the white/purple ones equally. If MSM weren't purple, I'd probably go with the blue, but I like showing some club color even if it's not the dark purple. Minim has the source files now and will try something himself since he actually has Photoshop.

We have weird team colours, so I prefer the blue. The layout is good, the design can be changed and fiddled with but the text layout should resemble something like that imo cause you've hit the nail on the head with it.

My insignia paint is a v1 as well, looking to clean it up a bit and release a v2 soon but that won't be storefront, I'll just send it to any peeps who are interested.

The Insignia isn't the best car for racing imo, I just like it and it suited the replica paint best. I think it's a fun drive as well with a RWD convo on.

Also just noticed....and sorry to be nit-picky but my gamertag has spaces Smile

I will fix that, it has to be correct. The tune is also a V1, I'll need some feedback to improve it. It won't make a leaderboard car but it's good for top 1000's in my hands on some tracks.

I think it's better if we build a little bit of a library up before we make a thread on FM.net really

Re: Poster development

Wow, a lot is to be said about these. They are so different from the ones I made up. Both versions have their strengths I believe, and a combination of both might lead to a great poster.

-size: I went with the standard Forza picture size, these are taller. I like these more as we can put more information on them to a point where everything we would want on a poster can be on it, while also not cropping the picture too much vertically.

-pictures: I know this is done as an example, but in posters for publishing, the Forza watermark should be cropped/shopped out.

-the MSM bullhead is a good logo and should be in the poster - great job.

-textbar backgrounds: I can't really tell which is better. Grey is grey, but it seems to work somehow so kudos for that.

-layout: this is where my view on things differs the most. I believe that the upper bar should be for branding and drawing attention, while the lower bar can carry most of the information. A poster should guide the viewer's eyes somewhat, having all information on the top will keep people stuck at the top of the poster, while the rest is barely noticed. That is why I would choose my header: keeping the one for the tuning as is, for the races I'd use mine with the addition of your sub-title and classes.

-The actual content itself is very good and should be kept imo. You've used the extra poster size well and added leaderboard positions, cost and search terms to the tuning poster. The race poster gets added lobby information and also a one liner explaining the series plus the classes used. I've already said what I'd do with the headers, everything that's left should find its place on the bottom.

I hope you understand what I mean when you take another look at the posters. I'm sure we can cook up something great when we combine all this.

the bull logo, which ive never really used all that much might actually look cool with longer horns, kinda like how the bmw williams had the markings on the nose - we could use them on r1 cars Wink

in my brutally honest opinion, I do think that either the red or the purple of MSM has to go, not they dont go well together, just that having 2 dark colors on a car can sometimes cause clashing and wont make things look right. I mean you could do a poll and determine what color to keep, and then have another poll to see what color replaces it. Just my $0.02

+1 for getting rid of red considering the site is purple already and purple is just better. Everyone uses red anyway

If we just have purple as the main colour and then combine it with whatever else would be fine for me.
