MSM tier system

MSM tier system

The purpose of the MSM tier system is to provide for more competitive races among members of all skills sets. The hope is to give those drivers who don't practice as often or struggle with certain aspects of the game the advantage they are missing. It should be noted the advantages in each tier will not promise a race win or even a podium finish, as driver skill and knowledgable tuning will still play an important role.

Each driver will be assigned their tier level prior to the start of an MSM series. Rather than using "achievements" for wins, top 5, and lobby places, we will be using a weighted finishing spot for the last eight races. A weighted finish is based upon where you placed and the number of drivers actually participating in that race. Your weighted number is a simple formula taking your finishing spot, dividing that by the number of drivers in that race, and averaging that from the last 8 races. Below is an example:

06 place / 24 drivers = .2500
04 place / 21 drivers = .1904
03 place / 16 drivers = .1875
05 place / 17 drivers = .2941
11 place / 16 drivers = .6875
15 place / 35 drivers = .4285
06 place / 23 drivers = .2608
03 place / 27 drivers = .1111
2.4099 / 8 races = .30123 weighted average

By itself that number won't mean much, but once we have that calculated for every driver, we can plac ethem among the group. We will only calculate a number for drivers with at least 4 races.

As before, drivers who do not have enough races will be considered tier 2. There will be exceptions made for some drivers based on experience where the leadership may promote or demote a driver into a tier to ensure competitiveness.

Why weighted results?

What we're trying to clarify by using weighted results is that a driver who placed 12 out of 25 drivers has accomplished more than a driver that placed 10 of 16.

To help clarify how the weighted results works, I have listed two actual member results below, as of March 19.

Dominic Mako
5 - 11 - 15 - 6 - 3 - 13 - 2 - 18
Average: 9.125
RetPetty
1 - 3 - 14 - 3 - 19 - 20 - 8 - 9
Average: 9.625

When we look at these two drivers, we can see that Dominic has three results in the top 5, with two on the podium. Retpetty also has three results in the top 5, with all three of those on the podium; however if we totaled these 8 places and and took an average, Dominic is rated the better driver.

Instead, if we took the same results and weighted them by the number of drivers actually in each race, we get the result below:

Dominic Mako
0.2941 - 0.6875 - 0.4286 - 0.2609 - 0.1111 - 0.5652 - 0.0833 - 0.6923
Weighted Average: 0.39038

RetPetty
0.0588 - 0.1875 - 0.4000 - 0.1304 - 0.7037 - 0.8696 - 0.3333 - 0.3462
Weighted Average: 0.37869

By performing better in races with more drivers, Retpetty is now rated as the better driver.
