Dominic Mako's Garage

Post by Dominic Mako on Mon Dec 10, 2012 12:51 am

In this thread I'll post pics of my cars and perhaps some stats and info about the car, depending on how lazy I am.

1997 #43 Team BMW McLaren F1 GTR

Spoiler:

This is one of my many Repsol sponsored cars. This livery was designed for the MSM GT500 series, where I had my best "legit" finish so far, placing second at Motegi. I tried to use the body panels to determine how the design would be placed in terms of colors. Some of the sponsors selected were Japanese to fit the series, with the Autobacs number board, and the JGTC tire sponsor, Bridgestone

This is the 2010 Renault Megane RS 250. I created a handful of sponsors to apply to this car, including the main Liofol sponsor on the side and hood. Like the McLaren above, I used the body panels to dictate the actual design, with a pattern to give texture this time. I also chose a couple French themed sponsors, such as ELF and Michelin for this car.

This is the 1986 Alfa Romeo GTV-6. I created a logo for Dell'orto, and added some other Italian-based sponsors as well. The two-tone paint scheme is pretty basic.

This is the 1987 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500. I've painted mine using a Repsol livery, which is very similar to one I Made for the Maserati in the 2.0L series. This car was my second choice, hence the similarity.

I had the Repsol circle logo dominate the side, with the white horizontal line that goes through that logo wrap around the car. I also put a Spanish flag down the center of the car's top, which terminates in a splatter effect ont he hood. The MSM Tier 1 number board was used along with some other American based sponsors:

This is my 2003 Renault Sport Clio V6, built and tuned for the Clio Cup series. As a primary sponsor I created a vinyl for TOU.TV, which is a Quebec-based video-on-demand website. To stay with the theme I also made a TransCanada logo and kept some other French sponsors.

The intake behind the door is painted red, which only took a few layers to match. I thought pink and white would go well as a color combo, mimicking the two tone style a lot of cars in the 40s-50s used. I painted the hood with dark carbon fiber.

Re: Dominic Mako's Garage

For this livery, I used a similar Repsol design to the Ford Cosworth posted earlier, but with a few changes. For this one I wanted to focus more on making the "dirty" look of the car, which shows up better in white. Instead of the off-track dirt I've done before, I tried to mimic more of the oil and tire marbles a race car might get marked by, as well as some damage by putting in what looks like tire marks on the rear fender, and cracked bodywork with duct tape to hold it together. I also put in some subtle dark marks on the front of the car as road debris bounces off the front.

It's a pretty simple design, but I'm hoping to evolve this effect as time goes on:

I agree. The tyre marks look particularly authentic.

Strangely enough, none of that was created using the lightning vinyls.

I haven't posted anything in a while, mostly because the cars I was painting were being used in a series rather than just painting for fun, and I haven't got much of a library of decals built up in Fm5 yet.  Anyway, I'm hoping Vm will have an IRL series for NA drivers in the future, so I put together a design inspired by Mario Andretti's car from the early 90s:

The USF2000 car is easier to paint, and I think this version of the Havoline car looks a little better than the IRL car.
